Paediatric Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Course

The Paediatric Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Course is a comprehensive training program designed specifically for junior doctors and healthcare professionals eager to learn the fundamentals of POCUS in the context of paediatrics. This one-day course is the perfect starting point for anyone new to ultrasound, providing a structured and hands-on learning experience to build confidence and competence in this critical skill. The course will be held on 21st May 2025 at Hospital Tunku Azizah, a leading center for paediatric care and education.

Why Learn Paediatric POCUS?

Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) has become an indispensable tool in modern medicine. In paediatrics, it provides rapid, non-invasive, and real-time diagnostic information that is particularly valuable in emergency and critical care settings. For junior doctors and beginners, understanding how to utilize POCUS effectively can dramatically improve diagnostic accuracy, enhance patient outcomes, and build confidence in clinical decision-making.

This course recognizes the challenges faced by clinicians working with paediatric patients, including smaller anatomy, limited patient cooperation, and time-sensitive emergencies. By equipping you with foundational POCUS skills, you will gain the ability to address these challenges and integrate POCUS seamlessly into your practice.

Course Objectives

The Paediatric POCUS Course is tailored to meet the needs of beginners, focusing on the following objectives

1. Introduction to POCUS:

a. Understand the basic principles of ultrasound and its role in paediatric care.

b. Familiarize yourself with the ultrasound machine, including probe selection, image optimization, and troubleshooting techniques.

2. Learn Normal Anatomy:

a. Identify and interpret normal sonographic anatomy in paediatric patients.

b. Recognize the differences between adult and paediatric ultrasound imaging

3. Hands-On Practice:

a. Gain extensive hands-on experience with ultrasound machines under expert guidance.

b. Practice essential scanning techniques on live models.

4. Clinical Applications in Paediatrics:

a. Learn how POCUS can assist in common paediatric conditions such as respiratory distress, shock, trauma, and vascular access.

b. Understand its use as an adjunct in paediatric resuscitation to guide interventions and monitor responses.

5. Build Confidence:

a. Develop a structured approach to performing and interpreting POCUS exams.

b. Learn to integrate POCUS findings into clinical decision-making with clarity and confidence.
